About Me

I'm Andrew Freer, a team leader originally from South Africa, now based in Canada. With over four years of corporate management experience, I specialize in leading multi-disciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, and ensuring projects run smoothly.

I'm currently transitioning from business operations management into game production. I recently completed a Video Game Development diploma at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, refining my skills to bring my leadership experience into the industry I love.

My Journey

My passion for games started in childhood—whether it was card games, board games, or video games. I grew up playing Pokémon, Soul Calibur, and classic platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario Bros. I even created paper prototypes of my own games with friends. As I got older, my love for games expanded to RPGs like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Elder Scrolls, as well as competitive trading card games like Yu-Gi-Oh!

Beyond games, I was drawn to entertainment and storytelling. In high school, I was part of a drama team that performed major musical productions, touring the country with shows like Crazy for You, Hello Dolly, and Annie. That experience solidified my desire to create experiences that captivate and inspire.

I pursued a degree in film at AFDA, South Africa, where I gained hands-on experience in screenwriting, animation, VFX, sound design, editing, directing, and production. But I soon realized I wanted to create something more interactive—something that put the audience at the center of the experience.

While working toward that goal, I built a strong career in management, running up to 18 restaurant locations while maintaining branding, quality standards, and training hundreds of employees. Over time, I developed a deep appreciation for team leadership, communication, and problem-solving. But I always knew I wanted to apply these skills in the gaming industry.

Determined to make the leap, I relocated to Canada, where my sister lives, to pursue game development and refine my technical skills. Now, I’m ready to bring my leadership expertise, production knowledge, and passion for games into the industry.

Why Production?

I am someone who thrives on building meaningful connections and creating positive change wherever I go.

I’m naturally empathetic and attuned to the needs and emotions of others, which allows me to bring out the best in those around me. My passion for communication and my ability to express ideas with clarity and conviction often inspire people to join me in pursuing shared goals.

I value harmony, cooperation, and emotional expression, which makes me a collaborative and supportive leader. At the same time, I’m organized and decisive, preferring structure and careful planning over spontaneity.

I’m energized by social interaction and love seeing a team work together to achieve something extraordinary. While I’m confident and steady under pressure, my idealistic and empathetic nature can sometimes leave me vulnerable to overextending myself or feeling let down when things don’t go as planned. I’m working on balancing my deep care for others with self-care and learning to address challenges directly while staying true to my values.

Overall, I see myself as someone who thrives in environments where collaboration, creativity, and purpose take center stage.
